Detailed solution for: Printer only prints monochrome images

Return to error solutions |
Written by Auto Mation,

Printer not printing in colour (even when colour dye film is fitted):

This error could likely be due to three possible causes:

a. Incorrect Driver settings

This could be due to incorrect driver settings in the driver "printing preferences". (The likely cause being, the current driver settings are not compatible with the actual film fitted).

Check colour film is fitted and also the "Colour format" options in the driver "printing preferences" as follows:

In the "Printing Preferences" window, select the "Card Front" tab. Check the "Colour / resin black (YMCK)" option is selected (this tells the printer colour film is fitted).

b. Faulty Dye Film RFID tag

Assuming colour film is fitted and the colour format options are correct (see above), the fitted film may not be recognised as a colour type (or even recognised at all) due to a RFID tag fault.

(An RFID tag is a special tag fitted to all colour films and is used to identify the actual film type to the printer. This tag is 'read' by the printer each time the printer is powered on or initialised).

If the RFID tag is faulty (or corrupted) and cannot be read by the printer, then the printer will automatically assume the fitted film is a monochrome type by default (monochrome films do not have RFID tags fitted).

Consequently, the colour film format options in the driver printing preferences will appear greyed-out (and not selectable).

c. No status connection between the computer and printer

A further reason the printer may not print colour images (with colour film fitted) is if there is no status connection between the PC and printer. The current status connection can be checked as follows:

Open the "Printing Preferences" > "Printer" tab > "Printer Status..." button.

The status should show as "Printer Connected" (against a green banner). A 'connected' status ensures full data communication between the PC and printer.
