Print to File

Written By Mark Lescano

To create a Print-to-File (.PRN) for troubleshooting, follow these steps to temporarily set the printer port to 'file,' save the job, and then restore the original port setting.

Some applications (like MS Word) show a Print to File option in the printers list... otherwise follow the steps below:

  1. Control Panel
  2. View Devices and Printers
  3. Right click the printers icon
  4. Choose Printer Properties
  5. Ports Tab
    • ℹ️ Note the current port as you will have to set this back afterwards
  6. Change the port to FILE  (tick the box)
  7. Click: Apply
  8. Print the job from your application as normal
  9. In the output dialog (depending on application) enter the full path for where you wish to save the file
    • you must include extension .prn
      Example Path: C:Users/username/Downloads/MyFilename.prn
  10. Change the port back as noted above

The resulting .prn can be used by Technical Support to see the exact info which is sent to be printed.

You can provide your .prn to Support via your existing webcase or email thread, thank you.
